This (http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99991367) article from NewScientist.com details the most mass market venture into copy protected CDs. Namely, NSync's new CD will be released in a least 3 different versions (with different copy protection techniques). Also, one of the types has (small) labelling saying that the CD cannot be played on computers.

that is bullshit..

this means that i won't even be able to play a farking music CD that i BUY in my computer..

lets see.. there is 100 bucks on the sound card wasted plus 140 on my CD-ROM plus 400 on my speakers plus plus.. Thats just bull.

Give it time... like CD-ROM game protection, there will be a way to crack this. Someone will find a way and it will soon become commonplace on websites everywehre.

Agree. Use music match jukebox, it can turn any CD into MP3's.

Ah, but see, these 'new' CDs are supposed to prevent that by using a special type of protection, or something.

exactly
one of the new protections will make it so that you can't even read the CD on a computer

So somebody will make a drive/drivers that CAN read the CD, I'm sure. If a CD player can play it, somebody can make a drive that can too...doesn't have to be mass-produced, just random h4x0rz who figure out how to mod a drive or something. And if not you can still hook your CD player up to your computer, unless they force the sound card ppl to fuck with their cards.

That is just bullshit.
PC games did not degrade the quality of their product when they introduced it into the general public.

This actually degrades the quality of the CD in that they put subtle ticks and tocks in the song so that when it is passed through a sound card, the sound card considers it garbage.. and produces static noise.
